According to a Nevada state filing with the Secretary of State, Musk and Jared Birchall, who manages Musk’s family office, incorporated X.AI in March. However, the filing does not mention the company’s purpose, and Musk has not commented.
The Wall Street Journal initially reported the existence of X.AI, and Musk has a history of openly criticizing OpenAI, one of the most well-known AI startups. In February, it was reported that Musk had approached researchers about establishing a new AI research laboratory to compete with creators of AI models like ChatGPT and Dall-E.
One former employee of Alphabet Inc.’s DeepMind, Igor Babuschkin, disclosed that he and Musk had discussed forming a team.
Musk’s efforts in AI could be a part of his broader goal of creating a “super-app.” He has often discussed developing an “everything app” called X, and he recently combined Twitter into a parent company named X Corp. He has stated that the social media platform will help accelerate the creation of X.
According to a recent report by the Financial Times, Musk is holding discussions with investors from Tesla and Space Exploration Technologies Corp. to help finance an AI startup, citing unidentified sources familiar with the matter.
