Effective Home Remedies for Treating Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus, medically known as onychomycosis, is a common fungal infection that affects the toenails. It manifests as the darkening and discoloration of one or more toenails, which can appear white, brown, or yellow. Left untreated, it can lead to thickened, brittle, or even cracked nails.

Nobody wants to deal with nail fungus, whether it’s sandal season or not. However, we have suggested some home remedies for toenail fungus.

Fortunately, several natural remedies may help you get rid of different types of toenail fungus. Do you know what does toenail fungus look like? Let’s see:

Toenail Fungus

1. Vicks VapoRub:

Vicks VapoRub is a topical ointment containing camphor and eucalyptus oil. While primarily used to relieve coughs, it has shown promise in treating toenail fungus. Moreover, it is proved as the best home remedy for toenail fungus.

A 2011 study demonstrated a “positive clinical effect” of Vicks VapoRub in toenail fungus treatment, and a 2016 study supported these findings, especially among HIV-positive individuals.

2. Snakeroot Supplement:

Snakeroot extract, derived from the Ageratina pichinchensis plant, is known for its antifungal properties. A 2008 study found it equally effective in treating toenail fungus as the antifungal drug ciclopirox. The treatment involved applying snakeroot extract to the affected area every third day for the first month, twice a week for the second month, and once a week for the third month. A 2020 study further supported its efficacy in diabetic patients.

3. Tea Tree Oil:

Tea tree oil, also known as Melaleuca oil, is an essential oil with both antifungal and antibacterial properties. Several small-scale clinical studies, as the National Centre for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) reported, suggest that tea tree oil may be effective against toenail fungus. Apply tea tree oil directly to the affected nail twice daily using a cotton swab.

4. Oil of Oregano:

Oregano oil contains thymol, which possesses strong antifungal and antibacterial effects, as indicated by a 2016 assessment. Apply oregano oil to the affected nail twice daily with a cotton swab. Caution should be exercised when combining oregano oil with other potent treatments, such as tea tree oil, as it may increase the risk of irritation or allergies.

5. Ozonized Oils:

Ozonized oils, such as olive oil and sunflower oil infused with ozone gas, have demonstrated the ability to inactivate various microorganisms, including fungi and bacteria. Research from 2020 suggests that brief exposure to low ozone levels can render many species inactive.

When to Seek Medical Attention:

While nail fungus is often considered a cosmetic concern, it can lead to severe complications for specific individuals. Diabetic patients, in particular, are at a higher risk of toenail fungus, and if left untreated, it could lead to diabetic foot ulcers. If you have diabetes or a compromised immune system, it is advisable not to rely solely on home remedies for toenail fungus.

Consult your healthcare provider for the best course of action and share your thoughts in the comment section, if you are facing any kind of nail fungus.
