The Red Raiders (14-12, 3-10 Big 12) have now won three straight home games against ranked conference opponents, including three straight against the Longhorns (20-6, 9-4 Big 12) in Lubbock, and have won eight of the previous ten over UT at home.
Texas Tech evened the season series with UT with a 72-70 loss in Austin on January 14 after leading by nine at halftime. On Monday, Tech led 44-35 at halftime for another nine-point lead, but this time held off a rally to earn the victory.
“A lot of teams get in this scenario, go down, and get in a hole, and it’s difficult to climb out of that,” said Texas Tech coach Mark Adams, who is now 30-4 at home. “However, these people have faith in themselves. There’s an adage that says that with great success comes tremendous difficulty. We’ve faced a lot of difficulties, and while we’re not yet terrific, we’re demonstrating that we’re on the right track.
The Red Raiders now have 28 wins over Top-10 opponents in programmed history, including one in each of the last nine seasons. Tech went 0-4 at home to begin Big 12 play but has since won three consecutive games over No. 13 Iowa State, No. 12 Kansas State, and No. 6 Texas.
Harmon led the Red Raiders with 21 of his 25 points in the first half, while Fardaws Aimaq had 12 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Obanor shot 5-for-10 from the field, nailed two 3-pointers, and went 7-for-7 from the foul line.
Texas levelled the game at 64-64 with 4:16 left before an Obanor layup off an Aimaq pass began a 6-0 run completed by another Obanor basket. Tech led 70-67 with 1:03 remaining when Harmon drove in for a basket to extend the lead to five, and Obanor sealed the game with two free throws with 18 seconds remaining.
“We’re a fighting squad,” Obanor added. “Coach will compare it to a boxing fight, with 18 rounds and being defeated seven or eight times. It speaks more about the character and the individuals who will help us climb back up.
I bet that many teams would have collapsed, they would have cared about metrics, they would have worried about getting to the next level, and they would have stopped. That sense of urgency, that attitude of just going and not giving up.”
Texas Tech Basketball Conquer Cross State
Success like Messi, Texas Tech basketball completed the game with a 41-29 rebounding lead and shot 13-for-14 from the free-throw line. Along with seven 3-pointers, the Red Raiders dominated inside, outscoring opponents 36-18 in the paint. Jaylon Tyson and D’Maurian Williams each had five points, and Lamar Washington had three assists. Tyson also had six rebounds, and freshman Elijah Fisher had five rebounds and four points.
“Nothing beats getting hit and bouncing back,” Adams said in the locker room after the game. “Comebacks are fantastic. You’re on your way back. This has the potential to be a fantastic narrative. You stayed together.”
Harmon, who had previously scored 23 points in his career, ended the game 9-for-17 from the field, 3-for-4 on three-pointers, and 4-for-4 at the free-throw line. A buzzer-beater to close halftime gave him 21 points through 20 minutes and put Tech up nine.
Texas was led by Marcus Carr, who had 23 points and six assists, and Dylan Disu, who scored 11 points. UT made 23 of 59 field goals, 11 of 27 three-pointers, and 10 of 17 free throws. Texas had only six mistakes in the game but couldn’t overcome Tech’s 12-rebound edge.
Tech led 44-35 at halftime, with Harmon hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give him 21 points. Harmon went 3-for-3 on 3-pointers in the first half, while Tech went 7-for-12 from beyond the arc, with Obanor nailing two and finishing with 11 points and five boards. Tech outrebounded the opposition 20-11 and outscored them 14-8 in the paint.
Williams finished with five points and one three-pointer, while Jennings had the other. Tech shot 14-for-30 (46.7%) from the field. Texas finished 13-for-29 (44.8%). Carr led UT at the half with 11 points, while Rice had eight off the bench for the Longhorns. UT hit 6 of 11 three-point tries.
